Rush On The War
290 words.
Rush Limbaugh sounded off on Katie’s “free speech” segment last night, because if there’s one thing Rush Limbaugh needs, it’s a public forum to express his opinions. Overall I thought his spiel was okay, but he snuck in a couple of head-scratchers:
It is time to stop pretending these [terrorist attacks] are mere episodic events and face the reality that our way of life is in grave danger."
He had me until he got to the end there. Terrorists are nuisances, but I don’t think they have any power to seriously damage the American way of life. At best, they can disrupt the economy for a short time and kill bunches of people here and there. But no armies of terrorists are going to be marching onto American soil to forcefully impose Sharia on our nation, so saying “our way of life is in grave danger” is a little bit of an exaggeration. Maybe in Somalia that’s true, but not here.
Patriotism is rallying behind the country, regardless of party affiliation, to defeat Islamo-Fascism.
What Limbaugh described as “patriotism” sounded more like “nationalism,” which has a little more sinister connotation in my mind. I like America and all, but I don’t necessarily think we should force our philosophy onto others if they don’t want it, any more than I think Muslims should be forcing Islam on us. I don’t agree with the rules of Sharia at all, but if other people are happy and prospering from it, and not harming anyone around them, I don’t see why we should stop them from practicing it. I just don’t want anyone trying to bully me into submitting to Islam, and that’s what I think “the global war on terror” is ultimately about.
