ADD Media And Belligerentive Bloggers

Apparently an outbreak of war between two countries only warrants a few days of major media coverage. The CNN feed today mainly covered Bush’s un-newsworthy epithet and details of Westerners “fleeing” Lebanon. Pretty much nothing from CNN about the fighting itself or any of the politics surrounding it. Last night, NBC Nightly News For Dummies had six correspondents showing videotaped explosions from the “crisis” with Israel and Hezbollah. I wonder how many correspondents we’ll hear from tonight? It probably depends on how many cool explosions they’ve videotaped today.

Meanwhile, insecure Iraqi insurgents are trying to get back onto the front page by suicide bombing random soft targets for no particular reason. I honestly wonder sometimes what kind of statement they’re trying to make with these bombings. “Stinking infidels, we are so powerful that we can convince disenfranchised youths to sneak into undefended markets filled with civilians and painlessly blow themselves up! Ha! See how you like it without fresh fruit for a while!”

I found myself skimming over most of the conservative bloggers in my reader today, because they’ve all pretty much fallen into the “if you don’t support (X), then you must support (!X)” rut. Today’s template outrage comes in the form of “if you don’t support Israel bombing Lebanon back to the stone age, then you’re a traitorous terrorist sympathizer.” They’re calling out anyone who even hints that Israel might have some culpability in the region. It really gets quite petty and dull after the hundred millionth iteration. I think there needs to be a new word for that category of blogger, because “conservative” definitely doesn’t fit. I think I’ll start calling them “belligerentive.”
