The Baffling Case Of Bush And The Stem Cells

176 words.

I’m baffled over this stem cell thing going on in Congress right now. Which is not unusual: Congress generally doesn’t make much sense to me. But I digress. In this particular case, I’m baffled over Bush’s pledge to veto the stem cell research bill Congress just passed.

If I’m reading this right, the bill would allow research on leftover stem cells that would otherwise be thrown away, with the written consent of the donor. A Bush veto here makes no sense whatsoever. The stem cells are already being thrown away! There’s nothing to lose… if Bush believes stem cells are people, then we’re already committing genocide on them, so why not gain some medical knowledge in the process? Maybe he thinks throwing the tiny stem cell people away is more humane than subjecting them to a life of medical research. But that doesn’t make any sense either, because Republicans are always opposed to euthanasia. Maybe Bush thinks the discarded stem cells might someday grow big enough to escape the trash can and have a normal life.
