CoD4 Compromised

195 words.

Well, so much for PunkBuster*. I just got off a pub server where a rather obvious bot named “nC punkbuster” was winning every map. It was incredibly obvious on the KillCam. It was shooting through walls, spinning around in blindingly fast 180 degree jumps, ignoring people shooting at him, and running into walls. All the usual bot stuff. Except I was on a PunkBuster-protected server. Doh.

This is the very reason why Crayola Clan faded out of tournaments back in the days of Quake 3 — rampant cheating. I guess the problem hasn’t changed. (At least this particular bot was stupifyingly easy to spot on the KillCam.)

Heh.. a quick Google search for “cod4 bot” reveals a sponsored link for a CoD4 aim bot you can buy. There’s a YouTube showing it in action, and it looks similar to what “nC punkbuster” was doing. How times have changed. People used to be secretive about their aim bots.

Note to game developers: If you are paying anything to license PunkBuster technology, you are throwing your money away.

Note to PunkBuster: Uh, you suck.

  • PunkBuster is a technology that is supposed to prevent cheating in online games.
