Lingamfelter Op-Ed On Driver Fees

263 words.

Interestingly, I noticed that Black Velvet Bruce Li copied an editorial from the Manassas Journal-Messenger written by Virginia Del. Scott Lingamfelter (R-31st), and actually praised his efforts. Lingamfelter did make a pretty reasonable argument to try to calm down some of the hysteria over the new civil remedial fees for Virginia drivers. BVBL’s reaction is interesting, though, because Limgamfelter blames blogs for spreading misinformation, and as I’ve outlined before, BVBL and other blogs are partially responsible for whipping up the hysteria over the fees.

I don’t fully understand why there’s an uproar over these fees. I mean, I don’t know about anyone else, but there’s a lot of roads where I live that are in serious need of repairs. It’s a bit like driving on the cratered surface of the moon when you go through Richmond on 95 Northbound. Besides, as Lingamfelter neatly summarizes, you have to get caught doing something highly illegal to be affected by the fees. And I can’t say I’m too broken-hearted about drunk and reckless drivers having to chip in a little extra dough to fix my roads. Maybe after paying the fees, they won’t be able to afford gas anymore and they’ll just stay home.

Most perplexing in this hysteria is the fact that some Virginia conservatives are also upset about the fees. It’s difficult to fathom why the people going after illegal immigrants for their illegal behavior (“what part of illegal don’t you understand!” etc.) are so protective of the illegal behavior of Virginia residents. But I admit I have an odd perspective on things sometimes.
