Who Broke Up With Who?

Looks like the media focus for today is the important topic of whether or not President Bush will get into a fist-fight with Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the hallways of the UN. Serious Jerry Springer fans want to know.
Speaking of the Iranian president, this puzzling quote appeared in the CNN article linked above:
“It was the U.S. which broke up relations with us. We didn’t take that position. And then they should make up for it,” Ahmadinejad told Time.
I may be mistaken, but I thought relations with Iran “broke up” after some Iranians, possibly Ahmadinejad himself, invaded the U.S. Embassy in Tehran (an act of war, by the way) and took a bunch of Americans hostage. Were we supposed to just let that slide?
