Explicit Complicity

Tom 134 words

I was reading a CNN story about the recent Israeli commando raid into Lebanon, and this quote jumped out at me:

About 10 Hezbollah fighters initially confronted the Israelis, but some 300 townspeople heard the roar of helicopters, grabbed their guns and joined the fight.

We all suspect that the civilians are helping Hezbollah militarily, but that sentence makes it crystal clear: Even if they aren’t card-carrying “members” of Hezbollah, those townspeople are definitely complicit. Which puts all those scenes of supposedly innocent civilian devastation in a slightly different light. Not that this is news or anything, but you rarely see it spelled out in black and white like that.

(This reminds me of the Northfield raid by the James-Younger gang. I guess the Middle East is the modern equivalent of the Wild West.)
