Miller v. Webb: Observations
383 words.
Back to Webb and Miller for a bit. I never did finish my review of the debate, but it’s old news now. Now the hot item is whether or not Jim Webb was “jewbaiting” Harris Miller when he said something along the lines of, “you’ve been called the anti-Christ of outsourcing.” This has been snowballing into an “uproar” in the Virginia blogosphere, with Miller supporters calling Webb “anti-Semitic.” My response to that is: Nigguh please. It’s just an expression.
Moving on. Here’s an observation: I’ve got four Virginia blogs in my reader that are diehard Jim Webb fan sites (NLS, Richmond Dem, VA Centrist, and Raising Kaine). All four of them spend most of their time negatively portraying Harris Miller. None of them say much of anything about Webb, except that he’s a great, virtuous American war hero. I suppose that’s enough for them. Anyway, based on their public record, it seems fair to say that these diehard bloggers aren’t so much pro-Webb supporters as they are anti-Miller opponents. This suggests to me that they would support anyone who runs against Miller. I’m not sure what that means exactly, but it seems pretty significant.
Moving on. It occurred to me that I’ve been under the assumption that George Allen is a terrible Senator that needs to go, but I really don’t have any research to substantiate that. I know I find him pretty vacuous and creepy when I see him on television, and Mrs. Krehbiel generally starts swearing at the very mention of his name, but other than that I don’t know much about him. So I think my next step should be figuring out exactly why Allen is so evil. I think my voting plans might hinge on comparing Allen’s terrible-ness with Webb’s potential terrible-ness. (I think Miller might be non-terrible, but I’m dubious about his chances of winning a popularity contest in November.) If it looks like Webb would be even more terrible than Allen, then it seems prudent to stick with the “devil you know” until the next election cycle.
Lastly, I was flattered to see myself linked on GOTV (a pro-Miller blog), but I should point out that while it probably does sound like I’m leaning pretty Democratic, I haven’t made up my mind about November yet (see above).
