Unified Christian Theory

261 words.

It’s rather annoying to me when people mis-characterize the different denominations of Christians and Christianity. It frequently happens when people mistakenly assume all Christians are part of Pat Robertson’s army of zombies. But it can also happen in other ways. Take this, for example: Here Comes the Next Church/State Battle by Mark Noonan. The offending text comes very early in the article:

The issue is the State of Massachusetts forcing Catholic organizations to adopt children out to same sex couples. This is something not permissible in the Christian faith because, according to Christian teaching, the family is ordained by God as a man and a woman and their children, natural and adoptive.

See anything wrong there? Ten points if you noticed that Noonan suddenly switched from speaking for Catholics to speaking for Christians. Noonan suggests that all Christians should be morally opposed to allowing Catholic Charities to place adoptees with same-sex couples, because of our “Christian faith” and “Christian teaching.”

In a word: Horse pucky. My Christian teaching didn’t say jack about same-sex couples adopting. If there is such a thing as a single unified “Christian faith” and “Christian teaching,” I would guess it probably looks something like the Nicene Creed and the Ten Commandments, which, last time I checked, doesn’t say anything about qualifications for adoption.

So, pundits of America, stop lumping Christians in with Catholics, and while you’re at it, stop using Christianity for your political agendas. Just be truthful and say, “we’d rather leave our kids in the orphanage ‘cause letting the homosekshuls raise ’em creeps us out.”
