Washington at Tampa Bay Prediction

Washington travels to Tampa Bay for the first round of the playoffs this Saturday. Who would have thought I’d be saying that? The last time Washington was in the playoffs was 1999. That was pretty exciting, but even then you knew they weren’t going to a Superbowl or anything. They’ve been a completely mediocre team (at best - let’s not even talk about the Steve Spurrier years) since the 1992 season when Joe Gibbs first retired.
What are their chances? I’ll admit I didn’t think for one second that Washington would win five straight games to make it into the playoffs. This year, at times they’ve looked really good, like they had tons of talent and potential, and then at other times they’ve stunk up the joint. My heart wants them to win at least the wildcard game, but my head is telling me there’s just no way. Their secondary is so banged up they might need to ask for volunteers from the stands to start at cornerback. Against Philadelphia, a team they should have handled easily, they were giving up heartbreakingly big passing plays right and left. And Brunell and the offense looked pretty shaky all game. False starts all over the place.
Earlier in the season, Washington lost to Tampa Bay 36-35 on a last-second Mike Alstott 2-point conversion that was upheld on replay. I don’t think this game will be nearly as high scoring, but I think it will be close. I’m going to pick Tampa Bay by a field goal; 17-14. I hope I’m wrong!
