08:41 # I desperately need to work out a way to physically detach my backup microphone from the gaming desk. Every time I have to use it, the audio is completely wrecked by thumps and bumps from moving the mouse around on the desk. Somehow this desk really resonates too so it’s LOUD thumps and bumps, almost like a subwoofer.

08:41 # Oh I keep forgetting I need to manually start the GoToSocial server after every time the NAS computer restarts.

11:29 # Been reading up a lot on LUFS lately. Experimenting with the ffmpeg loudnorm filter today to smooth out the volume of my video game microphone tracks. They tend to have an excessive amount of dynamic range in them. I go from mumbling to myself while trying to solve puzzles to yelling in the middle of combat, leaning forwards and backwards and sideways around the microphone, so the volume is all over the place. I use a compressor but it isn’t enough unless I’m consciously thinking about mic discipline.
- 11:32 # I’m constantly tweaking the audio of my game videos. My general goal is for someone to be on YouTube and be able to go from watching a broadcast television show to watching one of my videos without having to adjust their volume too much. So I’m always tweaking the loudness of my voice versus the loudness of the game, applying compression to the game, ducking, etc. etc.

23:14 # Finished the Silent Hill 2 remake tonight. Fantastic remake (in that I never would have played the PS2 version ever), fantastic story, however the combat mechanics during boss fights was pretty frustrating, to say the least. As with most games where the story is really, really good, I wish there had been less game in between the cut scenes. The puzzles frequently got in the way of reaching the next story beat. Anyway, great game.

- 16:50 # Silent Hill 2 has inspired me to try to add multiband compression and ducking to my video post-processing scripts. The dynamic range of the game is really high so it’s tough to get a good mix where you can hear the dialog without also getting overpowered by the sound effects, all while still being able to hear me yacking over top of it.
