New Hampshire Independents

109 words.

In the 2008 New Hampshire primaries, 42% of registered Independents voted Democratic and 34% voted Republican. http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/primaries/results/state/#val=NH

Tim Russert nearly wet his pants with shock and glee when reading those numbers, but his reaction was meaningless to me because he did not provide any context whatsoever. So I did a little research.

In the 2004 New Hampshire primaries, 45% of registered Independents voted Democratic. There was no Republican primary. http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2004/primaries/pages/epolls/NH/index.html

In the 2000 New Hampshire primaries, 30% of registered Independents voted Democratic, while 32% voted Republican. http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2000/primaries/NH/results.html

Prior to 2000, it gets a lot harder to find New Hampshire exit poll results on the InterWebs, so I gave up.
