The New Boss

The Episcopal Church elected a new Presiding Bishop Sunday. Oh yeah, and she’s a woman. This is perceived as a bold move by American Anglicans. In your face, England!
So how will life as an Episcopalian change with a female presiding bishop? At our little quasi-conservative church, I’m guessing Sunday services will remain exactly the same as they always were. The Civil War-era choir loft will still be uncomfortably small and hot as hell, and we’ll still be made to exclaim that God is American with the singing of “Our country ’tis of thee.” I don’t anticipate any divine feminine rituals or pagan sacrifices entering the Eucharist any time soon.
Maybe as a result of this election, if we’re lucky, those 10 or so uber-conservative dioceses represented by the American Anglican Council — the Anglican group dedicated to reversing any social changes made in the last 30 years — will finally split off and quit bugging the rest of us (ie. the other 90 dioceses). (On Larry King the other night, the President of the AAC, Canon David Anderson, literally looked like he had just stepped out of a 1950s pro-segregation rally.) They can call their new church the Anglican Neanderthal Communion.
