BlogPac Good or Evil?

188 words.

I saw this post a few days ago: BlogPac: For the Netroots, From the Netroots. It’s advertising a site where you can donate to so-called “netroots” candidates, or to this thing called “BlogPac,” which is basically a bank account to fund the MyDD/DailyKos people in improving the “image” of the netroots. (Also, buried in the middle of a paragraph, they also “need to be paid for the work [they] do.” Caveat emptor.)

A while back, when there was some legislation in Congress about regulating political blogs, I thought it was silly, and was glad it was struck down. Now, in light of things like BlogPac, I’m wondering why shouldn’t political blogs be under the watchful eye of the Federal Election Commission? Daily Kos, for example, for all intents and purposes, is a poor man’s 527 group. And before anyone starts thinking I’m trying to censor free speech, I think the level of regulation should depend on the size and activity of the blog — there’s a big difference between someplace like Daily Kos raising money for candidate X and Joe’s Blog-o-Rama saying he thinks candidate X is neat.
