Abuse Photos

303 words.

Another tough day to find anything to comment on. Muslim protesters continued to protest, and “journalists” kept trying to uncover a Cheney scandal.

Point #1: I’m no fan of the MSM. I realized at least 10 years ago that I could get more information faster by reading AP on the Internet instead of watching the nightly news. So I’m thrilled to add my voice to the crowd of bloggers wondering why the MSM is plastering Abu Ghraib abuse photos all over our televisions, when a week ago they refused to show a few cartoons of Muhammed. I suppose technically there could be a valid reason: The abuse photos only insult the person(s) in the picture, whereas the cartoons insult all of Islam. (And, of course, the person(s) in the pictures probably won’t be coming along to burn anyone’s headquarters down.)

Point #2: When I think of the word “torture,” I think of some pretty gruesome medieval stuff. You know, rusty iron tongs and red hot pokers, things like that. (I saw a program on the History Channel about medieval torture once that turned my stomach.) So far, I haven’t seen anything particularly medieval in these abuse photos. I’m sure it was embarrassing and uncomfortable for the detainees, probably even painful, but in comparison to the Spanish Inquisition or the Holocaust victims, I bet they would consider themselves quite well cared-for.

They certainly weren’t, ahem, beheaded or anything.

So I have some trouble seeing these abuse photos as evidence of the torture that the Bush administration allegedly conducts.

UPDATE: My wife correctly pointed out that I didn’t include any links to the pictures. Doh. I had only seen them on CNN but I found some photo links below.
