This very moment, I decided that I’m going to abandon my home-grown blog platform. I haven’t updated it in quite a while, and the thought of doing so fills me with dread. I just don’t have the time or energy for it right now (my free time is dedicated to writing). So I guess I’ll be switching to WordPress pretty soon. The only problem is that I will likely lose every one of my old posts. Not that they were anything special, mind you, but still, it’s part of my online history, such as it is. I suppose I’ll have to put them on an “old site” link somehow. But how to keep all of the post links in the Google index working? Hrm. 124 words.

This is now a WordPress blog. Let the hackers and spammers now commence exploiting WordPress bugs. The old site is still available, kind of, at http://thomaskrehbiel.com/oldindex.php. Through judicious manipulation of the .htaccess file, old links to posts should still work, so hopefully I won’t drop off of Google completely. No, I am not at all happy with the theme yet. 60 words.

  • No-Go Importing Paged Atom Feeds. 2012-03-18 2:02 PM.

Today I was pondering importing all of my old posts into WordPress. This is not quite as simple as you might think when trying to import from a custom blog platform. WordPress has this handy RSS Import plugin, but it requires the XML to be a file on your hard drive. No problem, right? You just open up the source of the feed on the old site (which, in my case, is actually an Atom feed) and save it to a file. Wait, not so fast. That old feed has like 5000 posts in it. And the feed only shows the last 15. There’s a whole chain of rel=next links to follow to get the entire feed, 15 at a time. 163 words.

If you had previously been following /blog.feed or /stream.feed or /comments.feed, you may or may not have noticed that you weren’t getting any new posts. You probably thought it was because I only post every six months, but in fact, this time, it was because I forgot to redirect them to WordPress’s feeds, which are /feed and /comments/feed. So, if you were subscribed to the old feeds, welcome back! 69 words.

I had this impulse to put all my gaming-related posts on a new site, so here it is. I had the melanthius.com domain sitting around doing nothing, so it seemed like a fine time to put it to use. Needless to say, I will be modifying the theme considerably. I am not sure why all of the “gaming” WordPress themes all look the same: Awful. The only thing I will salvage will probably be the color scheme and possibly the Opal font (I don’t know what it’s actually called, but on the Amiga, the super-rounded-letters font was called Opal). 99 words.

It snowed last night. A thick, wet, yucky snow that subsequently froze, accumulating to perhaps a couple of inches. I used to like snow. But now I find it just about the most annoying weather there is, with the possible exception of cold rain, which we have had for the previous week, so I suppose the snow is an improvement. On another note, I get a lot of Chinese comments. I’ll probably get one on this post. I always mark them as spam, so on the off chance that there is actually a real Chinese person out there trying to comment on my posts, sorry. 105 words.

The Newbie Blogger Initiative runs through May, so, to celebrate, I thought I would try a couple of new things and see what happens.T-Day StreamingI’m going to do a regular stream during the month of May. The stream will run Tuesdays and Thursdays at roughly 7:00 PM Eastern Time for about an hour, starting on May 1. You can find me at http://twitch.tv/endgameviable.Why would I do such a crazy thing? Well, everyone else is doing it, and we are all slaves to trendiness. I often talk to myself or the game while I’m playing anyway, so I might as well click on the “broadcast” button while I’m doing it. Also, I want to create an example of the kind of stream that I prefer to watch. What kind of stream is it going to be? Well, it’ll be MMORPGs, obviously. And pretty casual. Possibly informative and/or amusing. My target audience won’t be hardcore gamers. At this time I am planning to stream ArcheAge, because it’s all the rage. Other possibilities include ESO and … well, that’s about it. ArcheAge or ESO. Maybe I’ll alternate between them.NPC FictionI saw that one of the topics for this year’s NBI is “Creative writing articles and guides.” I wouldn’t presume to try tackling the vastness of a guide on creative writing, but a while back I had an idea for some writing exercises, and this seems like the perfect time to give it a try.The goal of my project is to write very short pieces of fiction, perhaps as little as 1,000 words each. The inspiration for the fiction will come from a random NPC in an MMORPG, preferably one who doesn’t otherwise have a part in a quest. You know how you sometimes run across an NPC who doesn’t seem to do anything but add atmosphere to an area? He or she may not even have any lines to speak, or may not even have a name beyond something generic like “Pact Soldier.” Those are the ones I mean. Why are they there? What are they thinking about? What are their dreams? If you could interact with those NPCs, what would they say? What quests might they give out?So I will try to publish a short fiction related to those NPCs every Sunday during May. (I suppose technically it would be “fan fiction.”) 388 words.

I generally try to avoid industry politics on this blog, unless it relates to in-game politics. (Like raiders versus casuals.) Which is why I don’t have much to say about the recent kerfuffle known as GamerGate. But I will say that I fully support equality and inclusiveness among gamers and I find personal threats against anyone loathsome. I try to cling to the possibly naive belief that truly despicable people are a very small, very loud minority. 97 words.

Way back in April, Endgame Viable became a year old, statistically speaking. That is to say, in April, I had accumulated my first full year of WordPress site statistics. (The Endgame Viable “brand” was actually born on October 16, 2013, while the first post on this blog-ie. the database that powers this blog-was June 29, 2012.) I’m not one to keep a close eye on statistics, but they can be useful to see what “works” and what “doesn’t work,” and some new bloggers might be interested in what I’ve learned. 475 words.

Well, down below a bit, anyway. Have you ever been sitting at work, or driving your car, or waiting at the dentist, and thought, “I wish I could listen to the story from a game right now?” Well I have. A lot. So much so that I’ve recorded a lot of my own gameplay with OBS over the last two or three years, converted it to mp3s, and put them on my phone, just so I could listen to them at work. This has been a weird day since I woke up. First, I slept all the way through the night without any interruptions from my cat, dog, bladder, or back pain, which is quite rare these days. The encroaching darkness and change of the seasons is at peak strangeness right now where I live, so all day the lighting and temperature has felt off. I have rebuilt Endgame Viable as a static site, which means massive changes for me, the developer, and some changes for you, the reader. First, it probably looks completely different. Second, there are some things that you won’t be able to do on the new site, at least not initially: Search for posts. Update: The workaround is to type “your search term site:endgameviable.com” into Google. Comment on posts. For comments, I wired up a somewhat janky private Remark42 server. Like posts. Unfortunately those were the major sacrifices I had to make in order to jump to a static site. I know there’s at least a couple of people out there who still like to comment on blog posts, and I hate to take away that feature, but Progress Demands Sacrifice, as they say. (I’m sure somebody, somewhere says that.) For the time being, you can ping me on Twitter at @endgameviable, or yell at me in the Blaugust Discord. 289 words.
