And We’re Back In Remnant: From The Ashes

420 words.

I’m rendering some videos so I have a moment here.

Soon after ragequitting Remnant: From The Ashes because of the Shroud boss, I went back and figured out how to defeat that bastard. My recipe for success was:

  • Replace the medium/short-range coach gun I was given at the start with a long-range hunter’s rifle.
  • Upgrade the hunter’s rifle to +2.
  • Install the Hot Shot weapon mod in the hunter’s rifle, which does stacks of fire damage over time.
  • Listen to YouTube videos while mindlessly repeating the boss fight over and over again for a total of about an hour and a half. I counted a total of 33 tries.

UPDATE 8/27: Here is my victorious Shroud video.

When I selected my “archetype” at the beginning, I assumed I was making a class selection and the weapons I was given were the only weapons I could use. It turns out that the initial archetype is similar to Souls games and is just a starting preset. Apparently you can use whatever weapons or armor you want. For Shroud, long-range weaponry is definitely preferable.

There’s something about this game that keeps calling me back to it, though I could list a large number of things I don’t like about it. For example, I’m not a big fan of the procedurally-generated areas. It makes them largely forgettable. They’re just generic areas filled with enemies, somewhat similar to shooters of the 90s.

But somehow it’s still pushing my gamer motivation buttons.

The shooter controls feel very comfortable and smooth to me, rather like a 90s shooter, so maybe there’s some nostalgia factor involved. There’s none of the needless complications of modern shooters. It’s just point and shoot, like the good old days.

And the lore is fairly interesting. I enjoy reading the journals and listening to the NPCs, though it doesn’t make much logical sense. It’s sort of a fantasy-post-apocalyptic world, which is a compelling juxtaposition.

I don’t know if The Root Mother counts as a boss, though it was behind a fog door. It took me two tries to get through that one.

Now I’ve gotten to the Singe boss. I’ve tried it once so far, and got it down to about 1/3 of its health. It seems fairly straightforward and far less intimidating than Shroud, but it still feels like there’s a lot of random variables thrown at you. I’m not a big fan of boss fights where “luck” is determining factor in achieving success. Later today I’ll work on that some more.
